Pros and cons
What ZBrush does especially well — and the limits to anticipate.
Pros
- The reference in 3D digital sculpting, extremely detailed.
- Some of the most powerful sculpting brushes and tools on the market.
- Retopology, UVs and rendering integrated into the sculpting flow.
- ZBrush for iPad included in the subscription.
Cons
- Notoriously steep learning curve.
- No more perpetual license: subscription-only since late 2023.
- Overkill for occasional 3D needs.
ZBrush: when it makes sense.
ZBrush makes sense when high-resolution sculpting is core to your work; for occasional or general-purpose modelling, a more versatile (or free) tool may suffice.
Keep if
You do 3D digital sculpting (characters, creatures, detailed assets).. You want the industry-standard tool for high-poly detail.
- You use it at least once a week
- The monthly cost (€30) is small next to the time it saves you
Challenge if
Your 3D needs are occasional or covered by a general-purpose modeller.. You want a perpetual license: ZBrush moved to subscription.
- You use it less than once a month
- blender (free) already covers the essentials for occasional use
