Pros and cons
What RenderMan does especially well — and the limits to anticipate.
Pros
- A film-rendering legend (Pixar's engine)
- Free for non-commercial use, full and watermark-free
- Studio-grade quality and stability
- Integrated into Maya, Houdini, Katana, Blender
Cons
- Overkill for motion, archviz or product
- Less simple to integrate than Redshift/Octane
- Commercial license $595 + $250/year
- Geared to the film-animation pipeline
RenderMan: when it makes sense.
A film-rendering legend, free for non-commercial use: perfect to learn. For everyday freelance, simpler engines are enough.
Keep if
You aim for film-animation or VFX rendering (Maya, Houdini, Katana). You want to learn a studio-grade engine for free (non-commercial)
- You use it at least once a week
- The monthly cost (€595) is small next to the time it saves you
Challenge if
You do motion, archviz or product: Redshift, V-Ray or Octane are more direct. You want an engine that's simple to integrate quickly
- You use it less than once a month
- blender (free) already covers the essentials for occasional use
