Magazines, brochures, books, annual reports, interactive PDFs: whenever a document mixes lots of text, images and pages to structure cleanly, it's the one you use. Where Word hits its limits fast and Photoshop isn't built for it, InDesign handles master pages, styles, fine typography and print output without a hitch.

    Like all Adobe: no free version, a trial then the subscription at around €26/month for InDesign alone, or the full Creative Cloud plan. For a publishing designer or a studio, it's an accepted production tool.

    The alternative that matters in 2024: Affinity Publisher, now free after the Canva acquisition, does a large part of the layout work with no subscription. For something open, Scribus also exists. InDesign keeps the edge on typographic finish, handling large documents and printer compatibility, but it's no longer the obligatory path.
