Pros and cons
What Google Chat does especially well — and the limits to anticipate.
Pros
- Native integration with Gmail, Meet, Drive and Docs: you chat next to the actual work.
- Spaces and threads to organise topics and teams without getting lost.
- Included in Google Workspace: no extra subscription to manage.
- Light, fast interface with a gentle learning curve for anyone already using Google.
Cons
- Smaller third-party integration ecosystem than Slack.
- Little value outside Google Workspace: strong dependency on the suite.
- More modest automation and customisation than specialised messengers.
Google Chat: when it makes sense.
Google Chat makes sense when you're already in Google Workspace and want to centralise team conversations without an extra tool; outside that ecosystem, a dedicated messenger like Slack or Teams remains more relevant.
Keep if
Your team already works in Google Workspace (Gmail, Meet, Drive, Docs) every day.. You want simple team messaging with spaces and threads, without adding a separate tool.
Challenge if
You want a messaging app rich in third-party integrations and advanced automation, Slack-style.. Your team isn't on Google Workspace: Chat alone has little value outside the ecosystem.
