Pros and cons
What VS Code does especially well — and the limits to anticipate.
Pros
- Free and open source (zero cost).
- Lightweight and fast for many languages.
- Massive, active extension ecosystem.
- Excellent native Git/GitHub support.
Cons
- Less integrated refactoring than IntelliJ (but extensions help).
- Remote setup can be complex initially.
- Debugging less intuitive than heavy IDEs.
VS Code: when it makes sense.
VS Code is the go-to for the vast majority of modern developers; heavy IDEs (IntelliJ, Visual Studio Enterprise) suit very complex or legacy projects better.
Keep if
You develop in JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, or multiple languages.. You want a modern editor with zero cost or subscription.
Challenge if
You need a full IDE with advanced refactoring (consider IntelliJ).. You're targeting very specialized legacy (e.g., Cobol, Fortran).
