    Our take

    Understanding Twinmotion.

Twinmotion is Epic's real-time visualization tool, and it's something of archviz's best-kept secret. Built on Unreal Engine, it inherits its real-time render quality but with an ultra-simple, drag-and-drop interface accessible to beginners. You import your model (SketchUp, Revit, Rhino, Archicad, or via Datasmith), drop in materials, vegetation and light, and output images, walkthrough videos and immersive presentations without knowing anything about Unreal.

The best part is the price: Twinmotion is free for individuals and firms making under $1 million in revenue, which covers the vast majority of freelancers and small agencies. Above that, it's $445/year (up to $1,850/year if you want the bundle with Unreal Engine and RealityCapture).

Who it's for: architects and interior designers who want Unreal quality without the complexity. The trade-off is against Enscape (tightly integrated live-sync), Lumion (cinematic look) and D5 Render (good value). But let's be clear: for a freelancer, a tool of this quality for free is almost unbeatable.

    Practical uses

    • Create marketing visuals for architectural or real estate projects.
    • Present a product design concept to stakeholders.
    • Generate images for a portfolio or sales proposal.
    • Prepare previz video for a VFX production.

    Pros and cons

What Twinmotion does especially well — and the limits to anticipate.

    Pros

    • Free for teams under the revenue threshold and for students.
    • Intuitive interface and gentle learning curve.
    • Photorealistic real-time rendering quality.
    • Direct integration with popular CAD tools (SketchUp, Revit).
    • Fast and flexible image and video export.

    Cons

    • Commercial licensing pricing is fairly high.
    • Less advanced material control than V-Ray or Arnold.
    • Learning curve for Epic Games ecosystem.
    • Performance depends on GPU capabilities.

    Twinmotion: when it makes sense.

Twinmotion is free and excellent for small teams; for studios, commercial costs add up quickly.
