Understanding Houdini.

Houdini is the heavy artillery of visual effects. Developed by SideFX, it's the reference software for everything simulation and procedural: fire, smoke, water, destruction, crowds, complex particle systems. Its defining trait is that everything is non-destructive and node-based: you build an effect like a repeatable, infinitely adjustable recipe. That's what makes it the standard of film VFX studios.

The downside is one of the steepest learning curves on the market: Houdini thinks differently from other 3D apps, and it takes time to tame. On price, there's real generosity: Houdini Apprentice is free for non-commercial use (with watermark), and Houdini Indie is only $299/year for freelancers under $100k revenue. The Core (~$1,995/year) and FX (~$4,495) versions target studios.

Who it's for: FX artists, technical motion design and anyone wanting serious simulations. For general 3D or simpler motion, Cinema 4D or Blender are far more approachable. But the moment you get into simulation and advanced procedural work, Houdini has no real equivalent, and its Indie tier makes it surprisingly affordable.
