    01 / The selection

    Which tool does what?

    02 / ToolTrim's take

    Why these tools together?

Lightroom remains hard to replace when the real need is catalog management: selection, collections, metadata, presets, and batch export. Photoshop helps with heavy retouching, but should not justify full Creative Cloud if Illustrator, InDesign, and Premiere are unused. Client delivery can stay simple: Drive per client folder, clean naming, Tally for briefs, Stripe or Indy for payment/billing.

    A good fit if…

Solo photographers, personal branding shoots, social content, simple packshots, and everyday retouching.

    Look elsewhere if…

You run a studio with assistants, DAM, multi-client approvals, and very high volume.

    Select fast

Time is often saved on import, selection, presets, and exports, not retouching itself.

    Avoid lost versions

One Drive folder per mission with dated exports is enough while volume stays solo.

    Clarify the brief before shooting

Tally avoids back-and-forth on formats, usage, number of visuals, and deadlines.

    03 / Budget

    What should you budget?

Target budget$44per month, to get started
Core at list price$58per month, 6 tools on their first paid plan

The target budget is the recommended starting envelope. The list price adds up each core tool's first paid plan, excluding 2 tools without a fixed price. Optional tools are not included.

    04 / Trade-offs

    What to watch out for

    The trap in this stack

Paying full Adobe, premium storage, and client gallery tooling while most of the workflow fits in Lightroom, Photoshop, and Drive.

    • Full Creative Cloud

The photography plan often suffices. Everything else must prove monthly use.

    • Premium gallery too early

Before stable volume, Drive + clear conventions already cover a lot.

    • More than 5 shoots per month

Standardize presets, naming, delivery, and billing.

    • Recurring heavy retouching

Photoshop earns its place if masking, compositing, or skin retouching are frequent.

    Questions to ask yourself

    1. Is your Lightroom need cataloging or simple editing?

Simple editing → Luminar Neo or occasional Photoshop may be enough. Cataloging → Lightroom earns its place.

    2. Do clients know where to approve final photos?

No → a structured Drive folder with 'selection', 'retouch', 'final' exports removes a lot of friction.

    3. Do you brief formats before the shoot?

No → Tally should capture formats, channels, deadlines, number of visuals, and usage constraints.
