1.5% + €0.25 per transaction, that hurts. But is it really avoidable? A complete analysis of the true costs and alternatives for freelancers.

    The Calculation That Hurts

On a €1,000 invoice, Stripe takes about €15. On an annual turnover of €50,000, that's €750 going towards transaction fees. Enough to buy a MacBook Air every two years.

So why do thousands of freelancers use Stripe instead of the good old free bank transfer?

    Real Stripe Pricing (2026)

Stripe applies a simple pricing structure that can quickly add up:

European card payments: 1.5% + €0.25 per transaction

International card payments: 2.5% + €0.25 per transaction

SEPA Direct Debit: 0.8% (capped at €5)

Recurring subscriptions: same fees + free management

No setup fees, no monthly subscription. You only pay if you collect money. It's fair, but it's still expensive for a freelancer invoicing thousands of euros.

Why Pay When Bank Transfer Is Free?

The answer lies in one word: friction.

If you sell a classic service (quote > deposit > balance) to B2B clients, bank transfer is perfect. Your clients are professionals, they're used to it, and you can wait 2-3 days.

    But if you sell:

    • Digital products (ebooks, templates, courses)
    • Individual coaching sessions (€100-€300)
    • Monthly subscriptions (maintenance, retainer)

...then asking for a bank transfer is commercial suicide.

The step "add the beneficiary to my bank" is when 30% of your prospects abandon. They have their credit card in hand, they're ready to pay now, and you ask them to log into their online banking. Bad idea.

    The Hidden Cost of Free

Bank transfer has an invisible cost: your time.

How many hours do you spend each month:

    • Sending invoices by email
    • Chasing clients who haven't paid
    • Manually verifying received transfers
    • Performing bank reconciliation

If it's more than 2 hours a month, and your daily rate (TJM) is €400, you lose €800/year in time. Stripe fees are already paid for.

With Stripe, payment is instant, reconciliation is automatic, and reminders are scheduled. You save time, you get paid faster, and you reduce unpaid invoices.

    Alternatives to Stripe

Stripe isn't the only player. Here are credible alternatives for freelancers in 2026:

PayPal: 2.9% + €0.35 per transaction (more expensive than Stripe). Avoid unless your clients explicitly request it.

Sumup: 1.39% per transaction (cheaper!), but limited to card payments. No subscriptions, no automatic invoicing. Good for one-off services.

GoCardless: Specialized in SEPA Direct Debits (1% + €0.20, capped at €4). Excellent for recurring B2B subscriptions. Cheaper than Stripe for large amounts.

Mollie: €0.29 per transaction + 0% for instant transfers (iDEAL, Bancontact). Very popular in the Netherlands and Belgium, but less known in France.

    The Hybrid Strategy (Recommended)

    Here's what smart freelancers do:

Bank transfer for large B2B services (> €1,000). On a €5,000 invoice, saving €75 in Stripe fees is worth it.

Stripe for everything else: digital products, small services (< €500), subscriptions, international payments. The fluidity is worth the fees.

GoCardless for recurring B2B subscriptions (maintenance, retainer). Cheaper than Stripe for SEPA Direct Debits.

Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Offer 2-3 payment options depending on the context.

    The Trap of Fee Obsession

Many freelancers spend hours optimizing their transaction fees to save €200/year, when they could earn €10,000 more by prospecting better.

Stripe fees are not an expense; they are an investment in fluidity. If it allows you to convert 10% more clients (those who would have abandoned due to a bank transfer), it's already profitable.

    ToolTrim Verdict

Use Stripe from day one if you sell digital products, coaching sessions, or subscriptions. Don't be stingy with fees if it streamlines payment collection.

Keep bank transfer for large B2B services (> €1,000) where your clients are used to this process.

Explore GoCardless if you have recurring B2B subscriptions (> €500/month). You'll save on direct debit fees.

And most importantly, don't spend 10 hours comparing transaction fees. Spend those 10 hours finding a new client. The ROI will be much better.
