    Our take

    Understanding SEMrush.

SEMrush is one of the heavyweights of SEO and digital marketing. The platform covers just about everything: keyword research, backlink analysis, rank tracking, technical site audits, competitor research, content ideas and even the advertising side. For an SEO consultant or an agency, it's a Swiss army knife that replaces several tools.

The downside is the price, and let's be clear: it's not a €20 tool. The Pro plan starts around $140/month, Guru around $250, Business above $500. Each plan has its project and query limits, and add-ons (extra rank tracking, multi-user access) push the bill up fast. There's no real free tier, just a very limited account and a trial.

Who it's for: people for whom SEO is a profession or a core acquisition channel, where the tool pays for itself in clients won. For a freelancer doing SEO occasionally, it's expensive for what they'll get, and more targeted alternatives (or SimilarWeb for competitive analysis) are often enough. The right reflex: estimate what SEO brings you before paying this price.

    Practical uses

    • Track keyword rankings and improve organic visibility.
    • Spy on competitor SEO and advertising strategies.
    • Conduct site audits to find and fix SEO issues.
    • Manage PPC and paid search campaigns.

    Pros and cons

What SEMrush does especially well — and the limits to anticipate.

    Pros

    • Comprehensive suite: SEO, ads, competitive insights.
    • Extensive backlink and competitor databases.
    • Content optimization and gap analysis.
    • Professional interface for enterprise teams.

    Cons

    • High price even at the entry tier.
    • Steep learning curve for new users.
    • Can feel overwhelming for solo SEO practitioners.

    SEMrush: when it makes sense.

SEMrush is for agencies and established companies; smaller businesses should start with Ahrefs or free alternatives.

    Keep if

You manage an enterprise SEO strategy across multiple keywords.. You need competitive intelligence and backlink analysis.

    SEMrush becomes worthwhile when
    • You use it at least once a week
    • The monthly cost (€140) is small next to the time it saves you

    Challenge if

You're new to SEO and need something simple to start.. You manage only one or two websites.

    SEMrush becomes too expensive when
    • You use it less than once a month
    • A simple free version or a tool already in your stack would do

    Our verdict on SEMrush.

    Why this verdict

    Decent

SEMrush is fairly easy to replace with an alternative, no free tier to test before paying, clearly documented use cases.
