    Strengths and limitations

    Remix, strengths and limitations.

    What it does well

    • Clear architecture from day one: routes, loaders, and actions enforce a consistent structure
    • Built on web standards (fetch, FormData, Request/Response) instead of a custom abstraction layer
    • Migration to React Router v7 is described as straightforward for existing Remix v2 apps
    • Still the technical foundation behind Shopify Hydrogen for headless commerce

    Where it falls short

    • No longer exists as an independent project since merging into React Router (late 2024)
    • For a new project, you might as well start directly with React Router v7
    • Docs and tutorials published under the Remix name are gradually becoming outdated
    • Not very relevant if you don't already have a Remix codebase or a Hydrogen project

    What is Remix used for?

Gradually migrating a Remix project to React Router v7
Understanding the full-stack architecture now carried forward by React Router v7
    ToolTrim Analysis

    Our take on Remix.

Remix builds a React app around routes: each route owns its own data loading (loader), mutations (action), and rendering, with server rendering on by default. Instead of stacking hooks and useEffect calls to fetch data, you write code close to web standards (Request, Response, native HTML forms). That approach won over a lot of developers around 2021-2022, back when plenty of people were looking for something simpler than Next.js.

Since late 2024, Remix doesn't really exist as a separate project anymore. Shopify, which had acquired the Remix team in 2022 to build Hydrogen (its headless commerce framework), folded Remix into React Router. React Router v7's "framework mode" is Remix's architecture (routes, loaders, actions, Vite-based server rendering), built by the same team (Ryan Florence and Michael Jackson). For a new project, the recommended starting command is create-react-router, not create-remix.

So what does this actually change for a freelancer in 2026? If you're maintaining an existing Remix codebase or working on a Shopify Hydrogen store, the skills carry over directly: loaders, actions, and route structure barely changed. But for a project starting from zero, you might as well go with React Router v7 (or Next.js, depending on the context): same architecture, a bigger community, and a name that won't quietly vanish from job listings in two years.
