Pros and cons
What Perplexity does especially well — and the limits to anticipate.
Pros
- Answers directly with cited sources — no list of links to sort through
- Choice of AI model (GPT-4o, Claude, Gemini) on Pro
- Real-time results — updated sources, not frozen at 2021
- Free version already very usable (5 Pro/day)
- Excellent for competitive intelligence, research and technical questions
Cons
- $20/month for intensive use — can seem expensive for search
- Sometimes hallucinations despite citations — sources to verify
- Less suited for long-form content creation (ChatGPT/Claude are better)
- Max plan at $200/month very expensive for general public
Perplexity: when it makes sense.
Worth $20/month if you spend more than 1h/day on web research and source quality matters.
Keep if
You do regular research or competitive intelligence (1h+/week). You want sourced answers without spending 20 minutes cross-referencing Google links
- You use it at least once a week
- The monthly cost (€18) is small next to the time it saves you
Challenge if
You mainly want to generate content — Claude or ChatGPT are better. You do simple or occasional searches — the free plan is enough
- You use it less than once a month
- A simple free version or a tool already in your stack would do
