    Our take

    Understanding Datadog.

Datadog is the reference observability platform for teams running cloud infrastructure. Logs, server metrics, APM (application traces), network monitoring, alerts: everything is centralized in one interface, with over 700 integrations. For an ops team or a CTO who wants to see everything at a glance when a service slows down, it's extremely powerful.

The real issue is the price. The free tier (up to 5 hosts) lets you test, but once you go paid, billing is usage-based: per host, per GB of logs, per enabled feature. It's known for producing bills that surprise, sometimes harshly, as volume grows. Many teams get caught enabling everything without watching the meter.

Who it's for: teams with real distributed infrastructure, several services in production, where unified observability saves precious time during incidents. For a small stack or a side-project, it's overkill: Sentry covers errors for far less, and open-source tools like Prometheus handle monitoring for free.

    Practical uses

    • Monitor complex multi-cloud infrastructure.
    • Diagnose application performance issues.
    • Centralize logs and incidents in a unified dashboard.

    Pros and cons

What Datadog does especially well — and the limits to anticipate.

    • Service Management included (incidents, workflows).

    • Total costs can spiral quickly.
    • Steep learning curve and configuration.
    • Expensive for small teams/startups.

    Datadog: when it makes sense.

Datadog dominates for SaaS and cloud-native teams needing complete observability; for an early-stage startup or simple infrastructure, free Prometheus + Grafana suffice.

    Keep if

You manage complex cloud infrastructure.. You need deep observability (logs, APM, RUM).

    Challenge if

You have simple infrastructure.. Your team is very small.

    Our verdict on Datadog.

    Why this verdict

    Very good

Datadog is hard to replace short-term, a free tier to test before paying, clearly documented use cases.
